Questions Surround Rockets Heading Into The Offseason

Post by KW »

From contenders, to pretenders, to out of the playoffs entirely- the Rockets saw it all last season, their first season with superstar tandem Dwight Howard and James Harden on board. Tied together with young forwards Chandler Parsons and Terrence Jones, and key role players Omer Asik, Jeremy Lin, and Patrick Beverley, the legendary Phil Jackson surprised the basketball world by taking the reins of the team at the very beginning of the season. Results were all over the place, as multiple trades that sent out almost the entire supporting cast to pair the dynamic duo with big men Demarcus Cousins and Ryan Anderson, and wings Al-Farouq Aminu, Danny Granger, and Darren Collison. Talent was never the issue. The issues were the lack of continuity due to the trades, the tinkering of the rotation, and a seemingly endless stream of injuries to Dwight Howard. Every time the team seemed to hit its stride, 21-year-old general manager extraordinaire BizGilwalker would strike a trade to make the team better in the present and the future, or Dwight Howard would go down with an injury.

However, the rocky start to the season took a turn for the better by March. Howard and Cousins' minutes were staggered, yielding better results, Harden was flourishing as the starting point guard, while Aminu, Granger, Anderson, and Collison played quite well in their roles as supporting pieces. At 38-23, having won 15 of the previous 20 games, and surging towards homecourt advantage in the wild Western Conference, Dwight Howard broke his arm in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies for the remainder of the regular season. Without Howard's imposing presence on both ends of the floor, the Rockets collapsed completely, winning just 6 of their final 19 games, and dropping down to 9th place in the Western Conference in the final week of the season. After a 4-point loss to the Mavericks to close out the season, Houston finished with a 44-38 record, a single game behind the 8th seed Spurs, just on the outside of the playoffs looking in.

Despite this devastating outcome to a highly anticipated season, the players, the coaches, the front office, and the fans hold their heads high and feel excitement towards the future of the organization. BizGilwalker feels good about the team but maintains that he is staying the course and fully expects a championship-caliber team around James Harden as early as next season.

"Before Dwight got hurt, we were rounding into the form we were expected to play at all season," says an exasperated Rockets GM, after yet another reporter asked how long it would be before the Rockets would take to become a contender. "From a talent standpoint, we have everything we need right here. We'll make the drastic change if we need to and the move is one that certainly takes us closer to that goal, but you can rest assured that James Harden is staying put. We've fielded plenty of offers for Cousins and Howard among others, but nothing is imminent and we're perfectly happy rolling into next season with the same core. Any move we make is going to be one that will help us win a title in the next two years."

The Rockets have reportedly received heavy interest in Howard, a top defensive center in the league who averaged over 18/11 when he escaped injury and foul trouble last season, and Cousins, a 23-year-old, up-and-coming center who averaged upwards of 19/9 per 36 minutes last season and flashed serious defensive potential, but also struggled with fouls. BizGilwalker says that he is 50/50 on whether a deal gets done for one of the big men. He also praised James Harden for his admirable transition to the point guard position, and expressed his willingness to continue it into next season.

"Harden is a mismatch for just about every point guard. How many other point guards do you know that are 6'5 218, shoot well from absolutely everywhere, attack the rim at every opportunity, play good defense, set their teammates up, and hit the boards every night? He's a handful, and there's a reason he made the All-Star Team playing that position."

Houston may or may not shake things up this offseason, but the city of Houston isn't lowering their expectations, and neither are the Rockets. It's championship or bust.

I will be very interested in what transpires in HOU this offseason. It may be obvious, but I think the Howard / Cousins experiment needs to end - not that it means you need to trade either at below market value.

A defensive point guard that can stretch the floor next to Harden would be ideal, in my opinion. I know the idea of running Harden at PG is interesting, but I think I've noticed that even more touches flow through the SG and, given his offensive efficiency, I think getting him more touches should be s priority.

PG - Defensive PG with Range
SG - Harden
SF - (Ariza)
PF - Anderson
C - Howard

That would be the perfect lineup, in my opinion. Your PG through PF can all drain the long ball. Awesome defense across the board, just need to fill out your bench.

Good article
Thid is probably the best team to miss the post season. DMC or Howard have to go but not for another scorer. Somebody to play D, shoot threes and help on the boards would be great

Team definitely has to be retooled. I believe you will make the right decisions this offseason. Im really interested to see whats the offer for Cousins, never liked him but looking at how actually plays in reallife Im puzzled if he could do nearly the same here if traded to the right team. (I know there is no correlation, but Im always biased if a player does well in reallife too, haha)

If you do end up moving him, be interested to see what you get for him but no issues in Houston with Harden, Howard and a plan going forward.

It does look really nice. It's the 3/D point guard that doesn't use touches that makes it tough to find the perfect match. Aminu has been holding down SF quite well, and does exactly what I want, sans the 3 point shooting.

Thanks. Granger actually filled that role quite well but he did end up taking a few too many shots. Unfortunately his inside game was abysmal and he shot 34% from inside the arc despite doing better outside of it and converting 98% of his free throws.

You should make me an offer based on his real life play.

Regardless of which one I move, I'm pretty confident I can win with Harden, a top 5 center, and the right pieces. Hoping to get another All-Star/near-All-Star for one of them to complete a Big 3 but the fit is definitely going to be key.

Pretty much. I think if Cousins or Howard were split into a starting PG and PF (quality comparable to whichever center) then the team will be a force next year. Cousins/Howard duplicates a ton and with Aminu starting the spacing is a bit iffy in my opinion but the roster have potential.
