Who Says RFAs Don't Leave!?

Post by Ocons »

Welcome to Utah Mr. Gordon
Image
Salt Lake City, UT – There was a point in this free agency where you could have heard kicking and screaming out of the Vivint Smart Home Arena, whether you were in Reno or Bismark.

The Jazz had misplayed the biggest off-season in team history. An opportunity to perhaps bring in one, maybe two, max-worthy players on top of their own Dante Exum. Forced to deal with the system in place, the front office was just outmatched. Despite having original plans to go into free agency with empty pockets, the team slow played things and it backfired.

The first straw was the Larry Sanders signing, after the buzzer. Then, things erupted when word leaked about who the team would be targeting next, only to hear that the league office already submit the offers for the day and that the team was ultimately duped by a few not to be trusted GM’s.

Then, less than 24 hours later and they turned their attention toward an unorthodox approach for GM OCons. They threw significant dollars at restricted free agent big man, Aaron Gordon and he opted to sign on the spot. It was a tense 48 hours and memos were sent inside the organization to keep things quiet in hopes of the unlikely event that Brooklyn didn’t match the offer sheet.

Here we are, time has passed and the former Wildcat is officially a member of the Utah Jazz. He joins just 4 other players currently under contract; Damian Lillard, Robert Covington, Doug McDermott and LaMarcus Aldridge. Gordon is a super efficient big man who rebounds and defends his position well. A journeyman already, playing for four different teams in just as many seasons, who hopes to have finally found a home.

“We’re super stoked to bring Aaron in here and have him as part of our core going forward. He is a stellar young big man and his versatility will be a huge asset to the organization. Coming in, he was a target but one we didn’t think we had a chance of landing, at all. We’re very surprised at this. It cost us good money and,, in hindsight, maybe we didn’t need to spend that much but sometimes you just don’t mess around – regardless of the system your working with. . . or against. We’ve still got work to do and we are toying with a move that will flip this league on its head.”

Sources close to the team aren't sure whether this relates to a Dante Exum S+T or if Lillard and/or Aldridge will be on the move. Whatever happens, this team has a lot of holes to fill and aren't close to being complete. On the face, it's certainly been a step backward but there's time left to make improvements. Will they be able to redeem themselves of some early off-season mistakes? Time will tell.

Send Brooklyn a bag of cookies, because that just saved Utah's season. Stunned the Nets did that - there's no other bigs worthy of signing to a large deal, and next offseason is awful for that position. Nets are now weak in big man department, especially at PF. That might even cost Brooklyn a playoff spot in a still tough East.

I'd like to hear the Nets reasoning why they didn't match. It's not like the nets are in cap trouble either. Just confused..

Great pick up here. Unlike some, I'm a Gordon fan.

Man you got to send Brooklyn Gm some cash after this hahaha, as there's no reason why they shouldn't match. I really hate that new Gms comes, ruins the team, then disappears. Anyways this definitely saved your off season, huge signing!

Brooklyn gm is being fired. He has already disappeared and not responding to peoples PMs. It's just Willy ruining his competition.

Very calculated move - new guys may not even know he has to match or not log in enough. If it was an established GM, this would have never happened. But good for you Kevin, well done man

And on the bright side, I own Brooklyns pick. So a double win.

But not a horrible off season for utah. Essentially trading sanders and ariza for Gordon

Yeah, that's how I view it. Really, I'm looking at it as Gordon for Sanders because I was letting Ariza walk regardless. In hindsight, maybe we should have held onto him but I'm okay right now. This bench is going to be absolutely depleted, though.

You know what, when I put the bid in on Tuesday, he was online just the day before so I wasn't 100% sure whether or not he was active and just quiet. . . or what. I mean, he made his contract decisions and was asking questions then just disappeared. I think he had to focus on retaining George and Cousins. I think I'm mixing things up but whatever

I'd be foolish to say that I didn't consider that, though, when making the offer. It's partly why I went so high. I know Gordon would sign it and the clock would start.

Nah been in leagues for yrs everybody knows I love competition but you...you know you need the extra help with a hopeful extra lotto pick... truth will be revealed when Dwight gets "hurt" this season.

Good luck though man.

On topic Gordon was really good for us, gives you a very athletic squad not sure it makes up for the loss of Sanders after the LA Laker FA conspiracy and your complaints about it but hey...

Answering the question in the title ... I do. They don't leave. The Gordon's case is consequence of an inactive GM. If you really want to have a competitive Free Agency, RFA's should not exist.

RFAs have been treated horribly due to our policies. I met President Obama, great guy. We talked about RFAs and how we need to work together to stop them from leaving.
