Hows Your Rookie?

Post by Beercloud »

I put together a basic formula to rate this seasons rookies. I used 36 min stats cause rookie playing time varies widely and tossed out players who weren't getting 10+ minutes per game.
I added up their ((PPG+RPG+APG+SPG+BPG-TOPG-PTAL)/7)*10 to get their rating. May not be as complicated as it needs to be, but I tested it on 3 players at different positions who are on top of their game this season. It seemed to test out good and I'll post their numbers below or reference. (Durant-Monroe-Irving).
Sorry couldn't get the [/td] off the page. New at this table stuff.

Don't have a dog in this fight, but not a fan of the formula. To me, a steal/block is a lot more valuable than a single point. The points allowed stat is completely relative and needs context. 8.0 points allowed is good if they're facing 10 shots, but it's quite bad if they're only facing 6. Same for turnovers, depending on how many times they touch the ball. And as a GM that's very big on efficiency, points mean nothing to me if it's on bad shooting percentages. It's more of a usage rating than anything else.

Holmes isn't very good yet and Brown hasn't played a minute. They were both picked in the 40s so I'm not worried, but I may start giving Brown the brief minutes Holmes was getting.

Rozier looks way better than I expected.

Can't ever argue with someone who has taken the time to calculate this and put it up. Nice work.

Happily surprised with Youssou so far. I thought we would need another backup big for emergencies but he seems to be able to cope just fine. Just over 5 points, just over 4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in only 17 minutes at 50% is all I could ever ask from a backup.

It's fun having a player like Stanley who shows so much promise, yet provides so much anguish at time. You know the ceiling is there to be an elite player.

Jameer Nelson is gonna be a star! I can feel it.

Dope article idea, no rookies for us but Pressey has been our project for a while and he's become a great passer. 25 now though so he is what he is.

Where's all 9 gm's who thought Rozier would shoot under 40% on the season? Told y'all that's not gonna be the case. 44.4% shooting, 62% from 3, 87% from the line. You should have replaced him with that bum Stanley Johnson who's shooting 37% and 19% from 3 lol. Key is you slowly work your rookies up until they're ready. And Rozier as a rookie, is playing great off the bench.

I know that you're not the brightest, but we aren't even a quarter of the way into the season. So tell me more what kind of "slow development" you've done in roughly 10 games.

Better development than you have with MR. 37% and 17% from 3.

You are completely using Stanley wrong. But hey that's none of my business.

Well, in this engine it is normal that player shoot over/under their ratings. So it is a surprise that Rozier is hitting shots, but it's an absolute possible scenario. However, he will drop in the curse of the season.
Stanley Johnson will never be a great shooter and I know Andrew knew that right from the start. SJJ is a Kevin love like player.

Loving what Payne is bringing as a rookie. He might not be ROY but he will be a great player in his own right

We shall see. But so far he's impressing me. I would say he's the leading candidate for rookie of the year, thus far. Still a long way to go though.

Don't have a dog in this fight, but not a fan of the formula.
Ya there are a lot of different ways to come up with a rating. I chose a basic more direct approach. A good thing I did cause it took me til 2:30am to finish it. lol
I was kicking around the idea of finding out from NBA data, the percentage of blocks that actually results in a change of possession and the percentage of steals that result into points. Then using that into the formula along with drawing turnovers etc... But time is of the essence and after I tested the formula on a number of veteran studs and it appeared to pane out, I thought I better just leave it and start calculating the rookies to get it done and go to sleep.

I'll update "How's Your Rookie" periodically and hopefully follow it up better than i did with the "Races and Chases" series I started last season. Which I plan to try and start that up again after the all-star break and this time make it til the end. If RL time is nice enough to me that is.

Yeah, I can tell you put in a good amount of work and thought into this, and your explanation makes total sense. My post probably came off as harsher than I intended. I just wanted to put my thoughts out there, because I could totally envision predator GMs in this league trying to fleece inexperienced GMs in a trade if a rating such as this one made their player look better or another team's player look worse than they really are. It'd be like a pedophile in a creeper van going up to kids and offering free candy. Who doesn't love free candy?! So the kids are lured up to the creeper van, and by the time the kids realize they're about to get raped instead of receive free candy, it's too late. I don't blame either party, honestly. The pedophiles can't help themselves when little kids are around, and the kids just want some free candy.

So my goal is just to try to prevent trade rapes before they might happen. I don't want to jinx myself here, but I think we've gotten better at limiting trade rapes in the league recently. Hopefully that trend continues.
