CSL Tonite! Analytics Stats Ratings Eyetest GM"s

Post by WillyJakkz »

Disclaimer: I don't have the game but even if I did I'm not an analytics guy per se and wouldn't even use it to evaluate players.

Hello CSL fans, I'm Cindy Cindy along with Steve Smith and welcome to CSL Tonite! Tonite we'll discuss the different GM styles of analytics vs ratings vs statiscal vs eyetest GM's so take it away Smitty.

"What's his STP%?... 59.2. He averages 13.8 rebs per 36... He has an 85 in passing and ballhandling... He scores 32ppg... He's a great defender if he had a guy next to him that can score they'd be great... I've studied his ratings and feel he could play well in our system...

Mindy, these are some of the things we hear GM's state time and again when surveying and evaluating players and team needs but is there a surefire right or wrong way to go about building a successful franchise?

Some GM's look at a players stop percentage to determine whether or not that makes a player a good or bad defender, some look at players DEF ratings to determine this while some look at steals, blocks, and or rebounding numbers to get an idea of the players ability... Now keep in mind basketball is a team game so does it matter whether a guy can stop another when you have help defense as a safety cushion to prevent scoring? Does great offense offset great defense?

There are GM's such as jestor and Dennis in LA and Boston respectively who come to mind when I think of analytical masterminds who employ that particular approach to survey and build their teams as noted by the following quote that was recently published in LA about their recent Rudy Gobert signing:
2016 - Rudy Gobert - Washington_Wizards : 1.9pts, 42%, 0.4ast, 2.5rbd, 0.3stl, 0.9blk in 10.4min
2015 - Rudy Gobert - LosAngeles_Clippers : 2.1pts, 37%, 0.4ast, 3.1rbd, 0.2stl, 0.8blk in 10.9min
2014 - Rudy Gobert - New Orleans Pelicans : 3.2pts, 34%, 1.3ast, 6.3rbd, 0.4stl, 1.5blk in 27.3min

He's one of a few bigmen who have 70+ DRB, 65+ BLK, 65+ DI.

His 0.86 PA/SF last year was better than Tavares' 0.92
You have GM's such as blackice in LAC and Bizwalker of the reigning champion Houston Rockets among others who employ a mixture of methods leaning heavily on PER and ratings to determine who and what type of players they target or build around for their respective franchises.

You also have a contigent of GM's such as WiilyJakkz in ORL that look at stats, ratings, and concludes with the eyetest of how they apply these toward player evaluation.

Is there a right way, or a wrong way? Are these teams successful and built to become champions or dynasties in this League?

With Indiana, Denver, New Orleans, and Houston as the only title teams in this League currently should a page be taken out of their methods?

What method are you and which do you prefer?

I kind of take a look at everything. Ratings first and foremost cause they determine how well a player will perform. Then stats and, a very important and overlooked thing, player's preferences, so I can keep in mind if there's work to be done with that player and if he can grow or not into a more efficient offensive player.

Height / weight and defensive metrics are important as well. So yeah, basically I look at everything. And I love 70+ defenders, I'm someone who believes great defenses are build with strong defensive units and not ones with defensive roles. You can hide a player but hiding two when you have 5 defending is almost impossible. I think better team defense makes individual team defense better as well, specially PA/SF

Big believer in advanced stats and apbr metrics. I think these metrics show how the player contributes to the Wins vs just score a lot of points or whatever else. I pay huge attention to stop% but somewhat less to PA/SF as see little consistency there for some reason. Offensively i like apbr such as Efficiency vs usage and also monitor position specific metrics such as TO% for PGs.

Yea, i am more along the lines with marcos. I will look at some of the advanced stats but it is essentially meaningless. Easy influenced by who is also on your team and team strats. Ratings, fg%, and preferences are what I give the most weight to.
FINALLY a logical HC Rule our work is done

For me it starts with ratings, but the biggest factor (imho) is pace, defensive intensity and the rebounding metrics along with offensive set.

For me i use everything i have access to. Some stats/ratings weighted heavier than others. Im still making adjustments because DDS3 is not required by law to make sense. Wish i could use the eye test because that's where you can separate yourself from your comp in dynasty leagues.

It makes sense if you understand how the engine works.

You wanted to try demar at PF that doesnt make sense. It would also likely not be a disaster DDS3 is far from perfect and far from reality. There is a difference between it making sense based on the engine and making sense based on reality. I was referring to the latter.

It's a game driven by numbers therefore ratings and strategy. Statistics are derived from those areas.
