Blazers Season Preview

Post by lakeshowak7 »

The Blazers had quite the eventful off-season that saw them completely revamp their 30 win team, despite the considerably large amount of progress that they made in the standings from the year prior. "We simply became impatient, saw the way Harden and Detroit were dominating the league and we made the appropriate shift to building a younger team that can grow together," Andrew, the Blazers General Manager said.

Hopefully brown paper bags are no longer a common feature amongst fans attending Blazers games.
The two superstars that headlined this team last season, DeMarcus Cousins and Damian Lillard have found new homes via mid-season trades. The Cousins trade netted them the draft pick that was used to select Stanley Johnson Jr with the #2 overall selection as well as Klay Thompson who was used to acquire Marcus Smart from the Charlotte Hornets.

When asked how he felt about the team's fit going forward, Andrew replied, "Smart and Stanley are the main pieces of our core, there is no doubt about that. We like McAdoo and McRae as complimentary pieces as well. DeAndre (Jordan) is one of the more ideal fits next to a player like Stanley due to his defensive presence in the paint. We will see how Stanley plays at the 4, but if the fit is there I really like our front court going forward and can't see us changing much there."

The Blazers may have a difficult season ahead as there will surely be growing pains, but the experience on the team brought by CSL champions and ex-teammates DeAndre Jordan and Jordan McRae will be invaluable. "I was brought in to be the team's leader on and off the court, and I'm really embracing that role," Jordan said. Jordan McRae has carved a very nice niche into the league as a low-usage, top-tier defender and he's a player that "really has no chance of escaping Portland," Andrew replied when asked about specific player's future with the team.

The biggest uncertainty surrounding the team has to be seeing how well Marcus Smart plays this season following the weight loss program he was put through this off-season. "I'm down 10lbs and feel great. I feel lighter, and I don't crave big macs at 12 am anymore.. I'm ready to go," Smart said.

Marcus Smart looks much slimmer while getting in a late night training session in mid-July.
The Blazers own 2 First Round draft picks this season - their own and Boston's unprotected pick. "Depending on how the season goes, we may trade those if it helps us get over the hump - as long as we slap Dallas around a few times as well," Andrew said. "It's important for Blazers fans to realize that we are in a good spot - this isn't the dumpster fire that is occurring as we speak in Oklahoma City," Andrew chuckled.

Chances are they will keep both picks - we predict a 25-30 win season from the Blazers, unless Marcus Smart has finally reached his potential, then perhaps a playoff berth is possible. Don't count on it, they likely need a 13-15 game improvement to make that dream a reality.

Team has the talent to make the playoffs, but you're gonna blatantly tank, so yeah.

I wouldn't say blatantly as I don't think this team is ready yet to win 45+ games, but if Smart makes the jump..ill go for it.

Truthfully there isn't enough usage left on the team to add a "superstar" from the top of the draft. Either I make this work or I have to rearrange again. Not sure I want to do that for a third time after cleaning up the mess that Portland was to begin with.

We are a defender at the 3 away from me being comfortable to try and go for it. Need those stars to align first.

Not seeing PO's at all not sure what jestor sees.

That said PDX is primed to make things very interesting very soon in that division as they are currently Top 3 team behind Wolves and arguably Jazz.

Future is looking optimistic for this team once again in no time flat honestly as they went from Lillard Cousins to Smart Jordan SJJ in one seasons time... more GM's could learn from this type of trading.

Don't think I'd have had the courage to make those trades. Way to recover.

Sorry man, just can't give credit. Any GM that has Lillard, Cousins and chooses to tank for more assets would find it tough to not be in a good position.

Yea, no ckue what jestor sees. Even if portland tries to win every game they are still a 35 win team max. Team inefficient.

Yeah sorry I couldn't find a Montrezl Harell for Otto Porter deal. Most of us aren't that lucky.

Actually it's ironic coming from you. A lot of us chose to be down here so we don't end up like you, treadmill'in with a 60 win team that's unable to win due to superstar power.

I love how feisty people get when others talk about their team. Shows how much we care about our respective franchises. It is what makes this league great.

With that said, I will sit back and watch Andrew start rivalries with everyone (SAC, DEN, OKC, DAL).

Are you truly a contender though if it's quite clear that you cannot beat the elite teams with the superstars? That sounds like a pretender to me.

If he doesnt tank a third year in a row they will be a PO team. West is just shit this year if it comes to depth. They are extremely top heavy though. 3 of 4 true contender are in the west (New Orleans, Sacramento and James Harden).

Really nice young core, I hope Smart puts it all together and becomes a superstar! Team has some cap flexibility next year and the Jordan trade was really nice in my opinion. Good offseason for POR.

One season in which we tied the 2nd best record, lead the entire league in point differential, stole home court early and lost in 7 games to the eventual champ. Completely agree, pretender.

But back on topic, Dennis is right. West depth isn't great so if they tank, they tank. If not, they can probably make the post season.
