Depth, Versatilty Allowing Rockets To Continue Experimenting

Post by KW »

Coming into the season, there were legitimate questions about what the Rockets' game plan would be after trading away forward Ryan Anderson for several younger and significantly cheaper pieces. 61 wins and 11 losses later (including 24wins in a row), the answer appears to "pretty much everything". The Rockets plan of surrounding super-scorer James Harden with versatile players capable of defending and scoring has worked to perfection. The diagram below shows how ridiculously versatile the main rotation is.

The diagram shows the skillset of each current Rocket, split into five main categories. The names closest to the center of the Venn Diagram are the most well rounded. A player is included in a circle if he is above average for his position.

With three players seeing their names in four of the five categories (Harden, Iguodala, and Marble) and more in three categories (Faried, Aminu, Collison, Gortat, not including the injured Thad Young), the Rockets' rotation possibilities are endless, especially since they have a handful of specialists at their disposal behind the main 7-8 players. The versatility (of Harden and Iguodala in particular, who can each play positions 1-4 depending on the matchup) has allowed the Rockets to break free from the typical positional roles and experiment with some unorthodox lineups.

The most recent example being the transformation of James Harden's role from primary ball handler at the beginning of the year, to either wing position based on matchup (where Iggy holds down the PG position on both ends), to the occasional role as a small ball PF, where he has annihilated the competition in his last two games, totaling a ridiculous 121 points in the Kings and Blazers games, tying and then setting his career high in the span of about 48 hours, while Houston's loaded wing rotation were able to take care of defense, and make way for a pair of dominant performances by Harden. The Rockets are able to exploit mismatches on offense, and match up with anybody defensively.

Being 10 deep with high-level rotation players and other specialists, the Rockets are able to limit minutes to avoid injury, and pick and choose which role players play on which night. As a result, talented players like Paul Millsap, Rodney Hood, Cady Lalanne, and even Marcin Gortat can pick up a DNP or play 30 minutes depending on the matchup.

It's not a typical game plan, but it's working as well as any scheme in CSL history. The Rockets are 61-11 and will continue to explore new ways dominate their competition.

You've done a great job surrounding Harden with quality players. The thing that makes playing you guys so tough is you have guys that can take over the game at all positions. Harden is the most dangerous all around offensive player in the league (maybe top 2 with George) and the fact that you lost Thad Young and didn't miss a beat is impressive. If we make the 8th seed it'll be hard to win.

Harden is an absolute monster, but even when he was out with an injury for a bit earlier in the season, your team kept winning games. That shows the kind of depth you have.

I know you've been experimenting with different lineups, so I'm curious to see what you go with come playoff time. I haven't decided yet who I am picking to come out of the west between you, SAC and NOP... But I have like 2 weeks before I decide haha.

I think the depth and versatility we gained by trading Dwight is the biggest reason why we are where we are right now, since he dominates the offense and his skill set pretty much dictates how you have to run your team. It's kind of crazy to think about, especially considering the core piece (Thad Young) only played 17 games this year, meaning we only have Marble and Gortat to show for it this season.

Some GMs built their teams around stopping a certain kind of team (i.e. the Pistons and Pelicans teams with multiple all-star big men, the Nuggets with Blake, or Houston, Minnesota, and others with Harden/Westbrook/another superstar backcourt scorer). When made the decision to deal Dwight (and this also holds true for when I dealt DMC for Oladipo and Iggy), I decided that I wanted to be able to have the flexibility to matchup reasonably against every team, rather than try to build to beat the top teams. My team won't stop Anthony Davis from getting 30/10, we gave up 69 points to Al Jefferson in the playoffs once, it wouldn't be able to shut down a CSL version of real life Curry/Klay/Dray or KD/Westbrook, but we can do enough as a team to matchup well enough in other areas to make up the difference.

My game plan will likely change every round of the playoffs, and will probably get altered during the rounds as well. The experimenting ends when the season does.

I think the flexibility your team displays is incredibly valuable in sim leagues. Since your coach can't make big adjustments in game, you have to decide what lineup and how you want your team to play before the game even starts. This gives you a huge strategical advantage because there is no planning for your team. Other teams you know how they have to play, with you there's no telling.

Exactly! If Davis drops 30 on me in one half, I can't make adjustments for the second half like a real team can, so I have to be prepared for everything.

Good for this things harden is a great idea in the pf, and if biz change this with this roster houston is champ secure. Open mind with all possibilities. The secret of playoffs is change and found debilities of our rivals. In this case probably miami, orlando and houstin have stars that can play in one to four.
In my team for example blake is a pf and in playoffs depend the teams can play in the c but no 1-3 obviusly.
Good job biz!

I like this approach as well.
Everyone is repeating that you only need a superstar to win it all (which can be true) but I prefer the depth approach like you have or Sacramento. You obviously have Harden as a superstar which cannot hurt neither :)
We are trying to do the same in Canada and already have a couple of solid players for next year (Jenning, McCallum, Johnson, Leonard, Henson, Gasol, Drummond)

Love the graphic!

The versatility on this team is what makes it so dangerous. The fact you can run guys like James Harden and Andre Iguodala anywhere from PG to PF is scary. I also think that RDM is one of the most underrated players in the entire league.

Agreed, RDM is indeed very undervalued. His skillset is pretty much elite for what he does, yet he's vastly overlooked.
