Pelicans Land Pick No. 1
In a stunning turn of events, the New Orleans Pelicans have defied the odds and landed the pick number one in the 2031 CSL Draft. They entered the lottery with just a 3% chance of landing the top pick, jumped an astonishing nine spots from their projected No. 10.
For the Pelicans, who finished the current season with a respectable but not outstanding record (37-45), this represents a golden opportunity to build a team worthy of competing for the CSL trophy for years to come.
This isn’t only because they got the pick number one, but also because this is the year Victor Wembanyama is entering the league. The consensus number one prospect brings a unique skill set that has scouts over the league buzzing with excitement. If he indeed ends up wearing the Pelicans jersey and continues to develop, he could become the face of the franchise.
With players like Frank Ntilikina, Lauri Markkanen, and Mohamed Bamba already on the roster, the Pelicans now face a crucial decision:
Whether to trade these established talents and fully commit to rebuilding around Wembanyama or to retain their current core and simply add him to the mix for now?
The next year’s pick is owed to the Detroit Pistons, so pushing for the playoffs makes sense. And talent to do so is there, even with Wembanyama needing some time to work on his skillset. However, this would mean missing out on trade value these players currently have and gathering assets for building around their new (potential) future franchise player. In addition, this would probably mean less game time for Victor, which could maybe impact his development (don’t know how this works in this engine).
The Pelicans would, of course, first have to re-sign Ntilikina, whose contract expires at the end of the season. If that happens, all three of the above-mentioned players will still have similar trade value next year, but it’s more about how focused they want to be on building around Wembanyama right now and how unwilling they are to make the Detroit pick better.
So, they must now weigh the immediate impact of parting with key contributors against the promise of a brighter tomorrow, a decision that could shape the franchise's trajectory for years to come.
However this shakes out, landing the number one pick is an incredible break for the Pelicans. This is the stuff that makes franchises. There’s still so much to work through, but there’s no doubt this was by far the sunniest day in New Orleans in awhile.
