Following a somewhat surprising uprising last season, the Bulls entered Offseason with an eye for continuity. Chicago placed 4th best in the regular season out East last year but vowed out early in the Playoffs against the Milwaukee Bucks. So this could be a way uphill or could be another restart for the team.
The first move for the Franchise during the Offseason was the acquisition of prime time defender Justise Winslow from the Detroit Pistons in lieu of Elie Okobo, Jake Layman, and upstart Devonte Bandoo. The move bolstered even more the defensive pedigree of the team, who already have last season's All-Defense 2nd Team winner, Davion Mitchell.
It remains to be seen though if this is just a stop gap for Winslow, who is highly regarded around the league. "We have some inquiries about him as soon as we got him from the Pistons deal but we'll probably play him out during his trade restriction period and see what happens then", said an anonymous team official.
Offseason moves along with the annual Rookie Draft where the Bulls holding 4 total picks. This time, the team went with the team needs as they selected offense oriented prospects led by the 6th overall pick, Tyrese Maxey. The former Kentucky stalwart, brings much needed artillery particularly outside shooting. "We're hoping Maxey lives up to his credentials and helps us to open up the lanes for our slashers and inside operators." said GM Rox during draft day interview.
Moving along, the team tried to trade for the 12th pick to get its hand on a typical GM Rox type, defensive specialist, Vit Krejci but failed to materialized. As a result, the Bulls went on to just select Saben Lee as its pick 20th. Lee is also known for his high pressure defensive ability though he doesn't have the tools to stay with his man regularly. Apart from his shortcoming and coming in quite raw, Saben though, has great handles and a capable shooter which extends to the rainbow area.
Coming in, with the 24th overall pick. The team select versatile forward Stone Gettings. He has the ability to snipe from ranges while also filling in the lanes. Stone gets his rocks too especially on the defensive end and is a capable man to man defender. The Bulls also added another frontliner in Tim Williams in the 2nd round to round out its Draft activity. Williams is an aged rookie who is draft day ready to contribute. He's a dominating presence in the paint offensively and an average defender. For a 2nd rounder, it could be a great price.
Aside from participating in the Rookie Draft, the Bulls quietly ended the Offseason with just two 2-way signings in Simone Fontecchio and Nick Muszynski to complete the roster. It's relatively an uneventful Free Agency for the team but the team is always open for wheeling and dealing no matter what.
Team Composition
Point Guards
*Davion Mitchell/Derrick White/Saben Lee
- the PG rotation looks to be the same with Mitchell still starting. He is already a proven worthy playmaker. Coming in from a somehow successful Preseason, Lee is most probably get the sub-in duty while White is an insurance 3rd string guard in case of injuries.
Shooting Guards
*Jaylen Morris/Tyrese Maxey/Landry Shamet/Briante Weber
- the SG spots continues to be the weak spots it seems following the Preseason showing of Maxey. He's not yet probably ready to take the spot this early so Morris could be the safest choice here. Morris, who played most of the time at SF last season will return to his natural position this time. Maxey needs to time to prove his worth but definitely will be given floor burn to fully accustomed with the team. Weber a veteran always ready to come in of needed be.
Small Forwards
*Justise Winslow/Stone Gettings/Lonnie Walker
- the SF spots gets upgraded this time with Winslow anchoring the defense at the wing. Gettings could be transitioned to a big SF as he has some shooting arsenal in him to play in the wing.
Power Forwards
*Precious Achiuwa/Tim Williams
- the PF spots will be for Achiuwa and Williams to work on primarily. This spot is interchangeable with the SF spot though, so it's possible that you may see Winslow and Gettings playing here eventually.
Centers
*Udoka Azubuike/Ray Spalding/Nick Richards
- the C spots belongs to Azubuike and Spalding alternating. Williams, while a bit short could be seen playing some C as well if need arises.
