Rogue One: A Darius Garland story

Post by thecoolestjedi »

Phoenix Suns broadcast crew

“Its a bad trade.”

“Its a really bad trade for this, 3 picks( one is a 1st rounder) and Denzel Livingston for a draft bust, how are we better?”

“The team is finding its grove after a horrible start and this GM continues to meddle with something that is working.”

“No hate towards Garland, but being on your 3rd team in your 3rd year as a former 1st overall pick means you are a bust.”

“Livingston was a engine for this offense with the passing and the career numbers shooting, so this move makes zero sense and only helps Detroit more than us.”

“This move really sells me on the act this front office simply doesn't understand what this team needs.”

The Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons agreed to a trade that sends a 2023 1ST rounder that is top 5 protected, a 2030 and 2032 2nd rounder alongside veteran Point Guard, Denzel Livingston to grad Darius Garland and Tyus Battle. The move has generated lots of backlash from the fan base that simply had gotten to a point of asking when will the meddling end. Many don't see the upside in 22 year old Darius Garland who looks to have maxed out in terms of his potential and simply looks to be a vanity grab for a GM that has meddled with a former championship team for very long. The deal was agreed upon very quickly, but the biggest issue surrounding this deal is 1st round pick that was dealt far too cheaply.

Image
A move that came out of thin air, with no one in the know until it was announced

Phoenix Gms have been accused of trying to “save” Garland and the fan base is up in arms it seems over trading away a expiring contract in Denzel Livingston for another in Garland who will garner interest. Darius Garland is a former first round pick in the CSL with the Washington Wizards, but has never lived up to that potential that many seemed to have for him. He has mostly been plodding with Detroit and was put up for sale by the new front office in the motor city. Moving to become the certain number 2 to Jayson Tatum will give Garland the ability to do what many expected him to do as a first pick and explode. However, this looks to be a gamble from a Phoenix GM that has gambled far too lightly with first rounders including the 1st rounder of last year that turned out to be number 11 in the draft which helped the Magic wheel and deal Jalen Johnson who now plays in Detroit. Many question the plan to try and salvage the career of a player that has been labeled a bust by many and failed to live up to the hype.

Darius Garland caught up to comment on the move and how it feels to be in his next environment. “Well I already see the newspapers and the internet comments about me. I understand I haven't had the career expected of me and I get this is a new team again, but I'm determined. This Phoenix front office sees something in me and I see a lot in this team. Being able to play with a superstar like Jayson Tatum will make me only work better and be better. I'm hopeful we can get the Suns moving and back to being a feared member of the Pacific.”

It will make thinks clearly interesting in Phoenix.
Reminds me a bit of the NO trades for Fultz and Little in going for a former struggling high draft pick. The two blossomed the seasons after the trades and I hope that will happen with Garland too.

As long as this 1st is not turning into a top 10 pick, totally worth a shot.

It’s worth a shot because you get 10 years younger and we all know Livingston’s numbers would go down across the season. However I still see this team stuck in the middle of nowhere. You don’t have enough youth with only Garland and Lawson as quality starting material, and you don’t have enough talent around Tatum IMO

I don’t see a drop off in terms of performance as Garland and Livingston are pretty close to each other. I do see Garland as more of an off ball player with great corner 3pt shot.

Without picks, even though I like the deal, I don’t like the fact you will have a hard time improving this team even further.

I like Garland. Not sure if I'm the only one but I would trade for him if I didn't have too many guards.

There was a similar issue with Stanley Johnson back in the day. (yeah I'm that CSL old.) He had everyone hyped come draft time. His first season was semi decent but not #1 worthy. That off season I went and offered I think a lottery pick and grabbed the previous #1 pick in SJJ.

The hate for him didn't stop until he won me a championship as the #1 option.

Picks are really of value during the first season. If they are underperforming their stock drops super fast.

Sort of like in the NBA if someone isn't a superstar in their first year.

Garland is fine and will do just fine. Good luck with a top draft pick(Garland)

Yeah there is a real lack of quality outside of a handful of player and hopeful as bigger contracts like Green’s expire that leads to me being able to pick up quality on a cheap during the time. Tho I agree; looking to use Green as a facilitator and Garland as my scorer here. However I am tempted to let Garland just touch the ball as much as possible to maximize any and all scoring opportunity.

Garland is just really really intriguing to me. Something about him and the fact he is only 22 helped make that decision for me. Loved Livingston tho, will miss him, but I think a few 20 pointers from Garland will cure me

Oh the hate for him is still there for some haha.

There are two different types of GMs. Ones that care about ratings and ones that care about stats or a combo or ratings/stats.

For someone like me, who doesn't like SJJ, doesn't matter what anyone does to redeem him, he'll be the same. I see him exactly the same as before he went nuts, just the way it is so reclamation projects work well but not on everyone. It's not the NBA here where everything is driven by numbers.

I really like Garland so I like this trade for sure and Phoenix have a nice young trio going forward. The issue is him being a FA and I bet others like him too so he's going to get paid but that's what happens when you have talent.

So you don't like SJJ? So why trade for Porter than? He was basically looking like a high scoring Kevin Knox bust after his first season.

I was still a huge fan and said Indy sold low but he obviously paid off for you.

Change of mind?

Porter always had elite scoring and efficiency potentials

Like bt pointed out, his ratings were there. Stats, maybe not. But I agree with him as I also hardly care about stats, ratings are everything IMO.

Of course it’s pretty simple to explain

A player can average 36% from deep one season and 42% from deep the next one. He can shoot with more or less volume. All stats and numbers are possible to be modified by strats and the normal variations between seasons

That same player might have 40 FGATB and that will never change. Doesn’t matter how he shot this year, in the long run he’ll probably shoot 40% from ATB if you give him enough attempts. Every shot he takes he moves closer to 40%.

That's assuming you know what I or anyone else looks for in a player when it comes to stats, ratings, height, fit, need, like, etc.

We all like/dislike certain players for certain reasons, nothing wrong with that.

Forgot to mention a key number..... contract haha.

But enough in this thread. Just meant reclamation projects mean nothing to some and those that value Garland will see it without and like this pickup.

It's a gamble yeah, but worth taking a risk imo. As long as you're enjoying what you are doing, ignore the critics and prove them wrong.

I think it makes a lot of sense to create a solid core of Garland-Tatum-Lawson. To fill in the rest of the team, I recommend prioritizing the cheap veteran market, especially in Free Agency. Decent 30 year olds are basically free. GMs like rhoxxy, blackice, drumr, etc are great at this.

Find the right player at the right time (like AD right now in SAS) and all of a sudden you're on a playoff run. Good luck!

Garland has not been playing like a number one overall pick at all. Not sure what's the deal with him, but maybe a fresh start in PHX is what he needs.
