Spotlight Article - SAS

Post by blackice »

This is a series I am bringing back, from years ago. I have decided to interview each GM in the league to get their opinion on a number topics that are all related to basketball in some way or another. The questions will be standardized so that each GM has a chance to reflect on how they will approach the interview. Depending on how the feedback is from each GM, I could potentially bring this series back every few seasons to see how each GM has grown and if the answers vary from series to series I will make it a regular part of the league. So without further ado, let's give the league what they want!

1. What got you interested in basketball? This could pertain to your childhood, or if you picked up on it later in life.

I grew up in San Antonio and it was the only team in town. My first professional sports experience was meeting David Robinson and Sean Elliott at their Rookie press conference. My 2nd experience was being the honorary ball boy at their first game vs the Lakers where I fell asleep under the hoop and peed my pants........I was 5 years old haha... I have been spoiled as I really have only known winning with the Spurs. Though i do not live in Texas anymore I still watch as many games as possible. Go Spurs Go!

Sadly as a 5'9 slow Half asian basketball was never strong suit for me physically lol

2. Are you an NBA fan? If so what's your favourite team?

Go Spurs Go!

3. Who is your favourite player and why?

I have two favorites! Boris Diaw and Patty Mills. They were my favorite for similar reasons, they both brought something unique to the game with either their passing or scoring and they werent superstars but defined what made the Spurs so good. They fit a role and owned it 100% Plus both players are huge coffee nerds which I am too!

4. Tell us about your team, and where you are now with the roster?

I really like this team because offensively it is a mix of high performing outside shooters with high performing inside shooters. It is really had to shut down both inside and outside scoring and this team makes you have to chose which you are going to attack. Also I have always been a fan of a lead scorer off the bench and Trae fits that role so well and really is the lynchpin for this team. On defense I really like our length with AA play SG and backed up Bam and Karlo.

5. Give a detailed answer on how you approach drafting, trading, and coaching.

I think my approach on trading has changed since coming back to SA. Initially i was trigger happy on trade but now I am trying to be more patient with the talent I have. Typically i favor outside shooters and big men who can block. On drafting, I am very poor in writing articles so it is something I do not do often haha. Typically when picking late in the 1st I look for a player with one big strength.

Much thanks to wms02a, and we hope you appreciate this insight into the SAS GM!

As a Spurs fan, how do you feel about Kawhi Leonard? Love him? Hate him? Just meh on him?

Happy when he was playing for us. Angry and frustrated when he was injured and wanted to be traded, and now soooooo grateful he was traded...... I am so glad Harper will be the one to retire the #2 jersey 20+ years from now

I thought Kawhi was the best player in the world during his time in Toronto. The way he smoked the Warriors in the Finals was just basketball poetry.

But since joining the Clippers its been downhill. I am not following him or Clippers but the occasional headlines or games that I watch where again he is missing time or losing etc. Seems he no longer cares.

I love hearing some of the early basketball stories like how you were 5 and met some of the old school. I'm older now too and miss that era of basketball.
