Boston Celtics - A Season Recap/Preview

Image

The Boston Celtics, fresh off a Cinderella season, are shaking things up early. Some people maintain not screwing with a good thing is the way to go, others that close isn’t good enough. After beating Washington in the first round of the playoffs, the Celtics lost to the eventual CSL champions. But that was almost a full month ago.

How about now?

For a team that resoundingly covets its Slovenian point guard turned combo guard, the Celtics made no secret of their desire to move one or multiple pieces in an effort to further improve their roster.

They did that.

Rajon Rondo, while historically important to Boston’s success, had recently taken a back seat in Boston’s back court. Jumping on an opportunity provided by Brooklyn’s rebuild, GM Dennis sent Rondo out and welcomed Brook Lopez to the TD Garden. Lopez, an offensively gifted center, looks to ease the offensive load on Dragic. Dragic, who has already had a strong relationship with Brook’s twin brother Robin in Phoenix, now looks forward to developing a stronger relationship with the more established twin.

More interesting, perhaps, is the front court yin and yang Boston now possess in the combination of Brook Lopez and Larry Sanders. Regardless of which positions either play, they obviously create an interesting combination.

Further, Boston was recently luck enough to have landed a sliding Tyler Ennis – a point guard that, while he’ll need time to adjust to the CSL pace, should definitely help ease the blow of losing Rondo. Ennis projects to be an established floor general with all of the tools you’d want in a lead guard – passing, handling, discipline and intelligence.

The addition of Lopez and Ennis is obviously the more exciting development to occur in Boston, so far, but it’s important not to forget that Boston successfully resigned Paul Pierce this past season to a two year contract worth $12 million. Also, surprising youngsters Brandon Knight and Jared Sullinger straight blew up towards the end of last season when given the opportunity to start for a resting playoff squad – they’ll look to build upon their individual success as the Celtics look to build upon their success as an organization.

The New Look Celtics

PG – Brandon Knight / Tyler Ennis
SG – Goran Dragic / JJ Redick
SF – Paul Pierce
PF – Larry Sanders / Jared Sullinger
C – Brook Lopez / Vitor Faverani

Sporting a relatively complete team, including legitimate offensive and defensive threats and a legitimate bench mob, this Celtics team looks to lead, again, the slightly less competitive Atlantic Division en route to another playoff appearance. The Pacers, Hawks and Hornets all present formidable challenges to a championship bid out East, and that is to say nothing of the challenges posed by the incredibly deep Western Conference.

Can the team stay healthy this year? Can Dennis improve Lopez’s efficiency down low? Will Pierce be able to contribute to a young but playoff hopeful team?

Really versatile rotation the one Dennis and the Celtics are slowly building in Boston.

They're strong at the frontcourt, with a solid 4 man rotation down low. And also at Guard, with 3 nice and promising bodies there.
Their weakest part could be at the wing rotation, but they still got some picks to make this season, and FA is still to come. And obviously, Paul Pierce is still there, with something left in the tank.

It's been a great process watching this Celtics team grow with the time, an how Dennis has made it part of his style.
Nice article Jace ;)

That's looking like a pretty sweet roster. Definitely a team to watch. Hopefully Sanders/Lopez doesn't look like Howard/Cousins

Great write up SS, nicely done. It'll be interesting to see how the new Celtics turn out next season, or if Dennis tries getting more deals done.

Dragic just blossomed into a star with the Celtics. Great pick up there. I never saw it coming.

There was no need for Rondo to hang around and now you have a serious post presence with a perfect complementary defender next to him. Perfect setup.

This team overachieved last season and improved with this trade as Brook Lopez and Goran Dragic are a very very nice C PG duo, probably one of the top 2 in the entire League (offhand I can only think of Curry Cousins maybe being better... maybe) but they're gonna be lethal and Sanders seems like a great fit next to Brook as well and I see them doing just as good or better than last season.

I can see them wanting a SG possibly, woulda gone with a future SF but they've since traded for the draft rights to Kyle Anderson so that's taken care of likely so yeah, I can see a move for a SG or maybe even dangling Brandon Knight or Larry Sanders around as trade bait for another type of move. Loved the Tyler Ennis pick also.

Nice draft day moves man.

At first, thanks for the write up man. Pretty much spot on. Just not sure if Knight will start for us at PG. It really depends on Ennis developement during the TC. If he's ready he will be our starting PG right away. If not I prefer a Redick/Dragic backcourt. But Ive a lot options to adjust my starting five and thats good news.

Yeah, Ive had the same thoughts. Rondo + Dragic in the backcourt is a waste of talent IMO. They were stealing the ball from each other, while we had no legit postthreat. The Lopez addition should result in less FGA for Sanders, which is good for our efficiency. But I will put up a more detailed article later to explain my thoughts.

Ive the same feeling. Sanders will be great next to Brook. Together they average nearly 5 blocks per game, it will be tough for bigs to pass our wall.

BTW, as if you are a fortuneteller, lol. Im really offering Sanders + Knight + x around, hoping to find an upgrade at PF or SG/SF. So far nothing finished, but we are trying to make the move you predicted.
