What Kind Of Baller Are You?

Post by Rob »

Just wondering what type of basketball players are you guys. Me, since im only 5'9, usually play as an off Guard. Im a pretty good three point shooter. Can catch fire sometimes. Solid defender. Basically 3&D. I can run point some times but perferrable like to run off screens. Besides that i dont do much. I get a couple assists, rebounds, and a steal or 2. I rarely gamble for a steal on D. What about you guys??

I had my growth spurt early on, so I played mostly PF until high school, where I was a PG/SF. I had a pretty nice shot, with range to 3, but my best asset was my slashing ability and defense. I constantly had the other team's best defender on me and I always defended the other teams best scorer.

Catch the ball corner 3, jab step outside and drive the baseline to the bucket. Worked literally every time for me to get a bucket, get fouled or both. Loved using the backboard/rim to my advantage when finishing also, making it near-impossible for shot blockers to stuff me. Ah, the good ole days.

I'm 5'9, but I play on the block a lot. Low post game is pretty good and I'm strong for my size so I push guys off their position. Play PG and have a natural feel for the game. Good/very good passer. Streaky shooter though but range to 3. Decent handle for a guard. Great defender if I do say so myself but I usually only step up on that end when challenged.

I played a lot of pickup games in college- usually 3-5 times a week whenever my creaky ankles were up to it lol. Ended up taking some time away because I was getting hurt too often, but I haven't really gotten back in game shape yet, plus I gained like 20 pounds since I started working a desk job. So right now, I'm purely a slow 3-point shooter that gets tired after one game to 16. :(

Hoping I can get back to what I was as a freshman and sophomore (5'7 130 off-guard with a disproportionately long 6'4 wingspan, decent shot defense, 3s, and drive to the basket). Weird thing is that I have no handles in the open floor (can't even bring the ball up the court under pressure, never have been good at it) but I almost never lose my dribble going to the basket (being left handed helps, because defenders try to take away the drive to the right). But my main skill has always been the catch and shoot jumpers with good accuracy out to about 27-ish feet. Somehow I've still got that but I can't do much else right now though with the added weight (unfortunately not muscle) I'm able to do a couple things in post here and there. But right now, I'm soft and have no lateral quicks whatsoever so I'm a total liability on defense. Think Kevin Love vs the Warriors but like 14 inches shorter.

I would be so bad if I had arms proportionate to my height (5'7 plus shoes). They're the only reason I can get an occasional block or steal.

Definitely an asset in racquetball though

I'm 5'9 w/o shoes with a 6'2 wingspan. Good ball handler, pretty quick.. My friends used to say I was the most intelligent player they played with or against.. And a very very very willing defender with a knack for picking up pockets if you weren't hustling as hard as me. Once I averaged 3.7 steals a game playing only 25 minutes when our team won a title here.
But basketball in Brazil sucks lol so probably you are much much better than me and facing much harder competition.

Ah, I never learn how to shoot the ball hehe. Had an amazing floater and was a creative finisher but always a 25-28% at most 3pt shooter and no midrange game as well.

the floater is my go-to shot on the drive especially if there's a defender in front. My floater looks like Al Jefferson's push shot hook shot but quicker but it's pretty accurate and usually my only chance at getting a shot off over a 6+ foot guy.

6-1 200, and I'm kinda a utility guy. Can do everything well, nothing great, though I defer a ton to teammates in an attempt to get them involved. I'm all about hustle. I'm sure everyone on here is better than me at quite a few things, but I can guarantee you no one here can out hustle me. I'm diving after balls, running after long rebounds and every rebound means I'm sprinting on the break - getting into transition is my forte.

I've run marathons, so I just run until everyone is too tired to run with me. Getting easy layups on the break is my bread and butter. I'm a legit defender too.

Grew up a Suns fan, so I like to think I'm a bit of Dan Majerle.

Love these type of threads haha.

I'm 6'0" 175 and I pretty much play positions 1-3. Growing up I was just a knock down three-point shooter. I was overweight in high school so I didn't do much besides box out and rain down threes. When I went to college I quickly learned that I wasn't going to get picked for any run so I started developing my handles and got in shape. My three point shot is still very good but nowhere near as good as when I was in high school.

I don't have great handles but I'm safe and secure with the ball so I'm able to play point guard without a problem. With my height and length, if I do play PG for my team it usually creates a mismatch. Growing up as a player with all skill and no athleticism, I tailored a lot of my game after Paul Pierce so I like to think I have very good footwork to go along with ball fakes and old man moves to be an effective scorer. Again, if im running point in either looking to get my teammates easy buckets or I'm posting up whoever is guarding me.

When I play off the ball, im either looking to catch off of flare screens or down screens to open myself up for a jumper or run pick and pop with my big man who I've played with for 16 years now. He steps out to three so we make a nice duo. Also helps that he's 6'2" and checking in at about 350 so he sets a nice, wide screen lol.

When I go to the rack, I'm not attacking the glass by any means. If I get deep into the paint it's usually floater or reverse, using the rim to avoid getting my shot blocked. If I go to my left off the dribble, it's almost always a pull-up or step back jumper.

Defensively I'm versatile but slow laterally. As a coach I'm great with my rotations and communication so that usually helps me keep up with quicker guards. I don't mind banging around with bigger guys but I won't rebound. I usually box out and let my teammates come in and gobble up the boards.

There's a good friend of mine who hates to play against me. He freaking hates it. He's 6'2 but my wingspan is longer than his.. He always believes he got me and tries to drive past me even at the post and I pick his pocket like 7 out of 10 times haha. Still he can shoot over me anytime cause he has huge leaping ability and he jumps a lot to shoot, plus he's what, 3-4 inches taller at least, even with the wingspan difference I can't reach his release point without a real good jump which leaves me vulnerable to offensive boards when we play 1 on 1.

But yeah having a big wingspan helps a lot. That's a very underrated part of defense, and it makes you a real pest to play against.

I grew up In Philly idolizing Allen Iverson and watching AND1 mixtapes so I would try to (or at least I used to when I played in middle/high school) embarrass people with my handling, but can't shoot worth a lick similar to my beloved AI. Although when my school would play the other inner city schools with guys who ended up playing at D1 programs, that wouldn't work so well in my favor. Those days are mostly behind me though now.

Different style of play here in Europe.
You don’t play for your school but for clubs – Was playing until my 20 in my city club with all my friends. Best years! Game and party right after every weekend :D
Despite being a small structure, we managed to bring the team quite high in the young category and played regionally. Probably quite far from US level though, I realized it one summer when playing in Berkeley against bunch of students – Physicality is a step behind in Europe. However, Some of the guys I was playing along or against did quite well, one of them particularly who is playing pro in Spain now and had a couple of selection with the French national team. I think he was even invited by the Pistons for a summer camp at some point.
Being 6-1, I was playing SG with a big tendency to abuse the 3s. I still play Basketball regularly but not in competition anymore – Living in a foreign country, I usually play with bunch of expats and it’s always nice to see the difference of style among nationalities.

I see we have some NBA talent here :)

I’ll be the All-CSL big man at 6’5 about 200 lbs playing SF/PF/C. Growing up in Tallinn, Estonia, I was one of the tallest all the time so got stuck in the middle. Then we started to play against other countries and I realised that there are guards on other teams as tall as me and big guys are usually 6’9 and above. Tough times. So I had to adjust – got a decent shot all the way to three (went 5 of 6 from downtown one memorable game) and some nifty moves to avoid big guys. Could never get my handle under control though so my face up game is not good esp against players with long wingspan who want to steal the ball all the time. At 19 I put on about 50 lbs of muscle so was quite an impressive athlete and played undersized big man. Almost made it to the pros but lost interest as realised that playing basketball every day is not my thing.

Right now I occasionally shoot some hoops alone recalling the good old times but most of basketball related activities are limited to CSL, checking NBA scores and playing NBA Hangtime on my laptop :)

I was an elite defender and ballthief when I played - so much so that one of my coaches nicknamed me Dr. Defense. Most of the time I played PG, but if the other team had a post threat at C, they would stick me there. I had excellent ball security and was an okay passer. The problem was I didn't score at all, which is why the high school coaches didn't take me - they wanted offense, offense, and more offense. I never looked to shoot because I knew I wouldn't make it.

I'm not gonna hype myself up, but I used to be real good. Now i would say I'm like a Dallas Mavericks Jason Kidd. Can hit the 3 and do everything else solid. I have real good passing ability and handling though. btw I'm 6'1 195lbs

Well lets see........at age 54 and 5'10" 195 lbs, I think I might be a lil slow now, need lots of rest and drink too much. Besides that, when are these NBA tryouts?

The last league basketball game I played in was in 1979 when I was a Junior in high school. Then I was the same height but only weighed 170 lbs. I was a starting SG, was a good shooter and a better defender. I only averaged 14 ppg as a sophmore though as the game was a lil different then. No shot clocks, no 3 point arc and faced a lot of zones because of it.

I played all 3 sports since the age of 8 til my sophmore year when I eliminate football. Then one day in the locker room lacing up for summer league game which were mandatory a few of my friends were getting ready to head to the baseball field to practice. I sat there for a bit, then unlaced my shoes put em back in my locker and walked into the coaches office and told him I wanted to only play baseball and handed him my summer uni. I put on my baseball gear and never looked back. Well I should say, after the multiple meetings with the coach and my parents I didnt look back. Played HS, college and semi-pro baseball til I was 50. And now Im a sim head to get my fix. I can still beat my 27 yr old kid in "around the world" and free throw contests occasionally though. Just sayin.
